Employment Law Attorney [
McKenzie Cantrell joined Kentucky Equal Justice Center in November 2013 as our Employment Law Attorney. Based out of KEJC’s Louisville office, McKenzie represents individuals with wage and overtime violations and other employment law claims. Her work also includes community education and policy outreach on employment law topics. McKenzie came to KEJC after having received her undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and her law degree from the University of Louisville-Brandeis School of Law. During law school, McKenzie interned with the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy and the University of Louisville Law Clinic. Prior to joining KEJC, McKenzie worked for local law firms in Louisville, practicing employment law and family law.
, Immigration Attorney, Program Director [
Guion Johnstone began work as Program Director at Maxwell Street Legal Clinic in September 2013. Raised in Western Kentucky, Guion holds a BA from Transylvania University and a JD/MSW from the University of Louisville. Prior to joining Maxwell Street, she worked as a forensic social worker for New York County Defender Services in New York City and as a staff attorney to Hon. Phillip J. Shepherd, Chief Judge of Franklin Circuit Court in Frankfort, KY. During law school, she interned for Immigration Legal Services at Catholic Charities where she assisted immigrant victims of domestic violence with U-Visas and VAWA self-petitions. She has also completed internships at the Legal Aid Society of Louisville, the Federal Community Defenders in Philadelphia, and the Smithsonian’s Latino Center in Washington, D.C.
Anne Marie Regan
, Senior Staff Attorney [
Anne Marie Regan worked as a staff attorney for the Louisville Legal Aid Society for twenty years and as staff attorney to a U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge for a year before joining KEJC in 2002. She has handled a variety of complex cases, including a successful federal class action that challenged Kentucky Medicaid long term care cutoffs. A recognized expert in consumer law, Ms. Regan often has testified on consumer loan proposals in the General Assembly. Ms. Regan graduated from Case Western Reserve University and received her law degree from Catholic University in Washington, DC.
Richard J. Seckel
, Director [
Rich Seckel has worked at KEJC since 1979. He often has served as an advocate on poverty law issues before state agencies and the Kentucky General Assembly. Today, he coordinates legal services task forces in consumer, family and housing law. Mr. Seckel has served as a board member of the Homeless and Housing Coalition of Kentucky and the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky. He is Treasurer of Kentucky Voices for Health. He holds a BA from Oberlin College (1974) and an MSW from West Virginia University (1979). Before graduate school, he volunteered as a boycott organizer for the United Farm Workers, AFL-CIO. In October, 2011, Mr. Seckel represented Kentucky Voices for Health at a White House briefing for consumer health leaders.
Health Law Fellow [
Cara Stewart started work as our new Health Law Fellow on June 18, 2013. A native Kentuckian and graduate of Berea College, Cara holds a JD from Salmon P. Chase College of law in Northern Kentucky. During five years of practice at Legal Aid of the Bluegrass in Covington, she represented low-income Kentuckians on a variety matters from housing to family law to consumer protection and public benefits. Cara also found time to volunteer in campaigns to enact local smoke free ordinances. Together with co-author Ryan Smither, in 2012 she published a Northern Kentucky Law Review article calling for reform of Kentucky’s landlord-tenant laws. Recognizing moment of opportunity for Kentuckians when it comes to health care, Cara brings talent, experience and energy to a new challenge.
