Working with Immigrants Task Force Agenda

October 13, 2010

Surveying the Future

This task force has shifted gears to focus on issues important to the attorneys and staff of legal services and other public interest organizations who work with immigrants but may not practice immigration law. As we move forward, how can we best tailor the work of this task force to meet those needs? An open discussion about common issues and topics for upcoming task force meetings.

Lunch & Networking

Intersection of Immigration and Family Law

A discussion of topics for family and domestic violence law practitioners who represent immigrant clients. Issues include how to address questions regarding immigration status in custody disputes, how to enforce Affidavits of Support in divorce proceedings and more.

Immigrant Eligibility for Public Benefits

A general review of the immigration-status eligibility requirements for programs such as food stamps, Medicaid and SSI for non-citizens. An open discussion of issues regarding immigrant eligibility as well as proof of status and restrictions and limitations on benefits.

Other Topics?

We’ll leave time to talk about other issues or to collectively brainstorm about problem cases or to share individual victories.
