About Maxwell Street Legal Clinic

Maxwell Street Legal Clinic provides immigration law services to low income people who “fall through the cracks” of existing legal services: people fleeing persecution in their home countries; immigrant victims of domestic violence, crime and human trafficking; and lawful permanent residents seeking to unite their families here. In eleven years, the Clinic has helped over 4000 individuals with more than 5500 legal matters. A map on the wall shows that it has helped families from all over the world—100 countries. Without the Clinic, most of them would have had nowhere to turn. With the Clinic’s help, they can achieve their dreams and become part of the community fabric of Central Kentucky.

Clinic programs include a unique Citizenship Project to help legal permanent residents prepare for the citizenship exam. The Project has offered “one stop shop” citizenship workshops in Lexington, Richmond and Danville, with help from students and community volunteers. Maxwell Street Legal Clinic launched the Citizenship Project in 2006. Since then it has helped some 300 people. So far this year the Project opened opened 83 new citizenship cases.
