Our Story

Maxwell Street Legal Clinic was launched in 1999 as an all-volunteer response to legal needs of the Bluegrass Region’s immigrant population that “fell through the cracks” of other programs. In its twenty years, Maxwell Street has become a vibrant and well-established community resource with a small professional staff aided by law students and enthusiastic volunteers. In 2008, Maxwell Street became a program of Kentucky Equal Justice Center.

Capacity has grown to match Maxwell Street’s good reputation. In 2018, we hired two new case handlers and a full-time Legal Assistant, creating a practice team to expand services to immigrant victims of crime.

Staff and volunteers provide low-cost legal assistance for immigrants at every stage of their immigration journey. We help people take first steps in the immigration process and many clients return for assistance each time they qualify for a new step.

During this turbulent time of policy changes, we’ve seen an increase in demand for citizenship application services. Immigrants are eager to take the final step in their journey.
