Closing the Gap: Fair Housing for Every Kentuckian

April is National Fair Housing Month, a time to reflect on the promise of equal housing opportunity and the ongoing work required to make it a reality. This year’s theme—“Unlock, Unite, and Assist: Closing the Gap on Racial Disparities in Housing”—reminds us that fair housing is more than a legal right. It’s a cornerstone of racial equity, economic justice, and community wellbeing.

At Kentucky Equal Justice Center, we believe that where you live shouldn’t determine your ability to thrive—but too often in Kentucky, and across the country, it does. Racial disparities in housing persist in both urban neighborhoods and rural communities. From unequal access to mortgage lending, to disproportionate evictions and unsafe living conditions, systemic barriers continue to deny too many Kentuckians—especially Black and Brown residents—their right to fair, affordable, and stable housing.

That’s why our Housing Justice program works every day to protect tenants’ rights, advocate for fair housing practices, and challenge the systems that perpetuate inequality.

Fighting for Fairness in Every Zip Code

Our attorneys and advocates support tenants facing eviction, discrimination, and housing instability. We represent clients in court, push for policy reforms that protect renters, and conduct outreach to help communities understand their rights. But our work doesn’t stop at individual cases. We use what we learn from our clients to fuel systemic change—because justice shouldn’t depend on your income or your zip code.

Lifting Up the Voices of Impacted Communities

We know that the people closest to the problem are also closest to the solution. That’s why we invest in community outreach and public education, empowering Kentuckians with the tools they need to advocate for themselves and their neighbors. We partner with organizations across the state to raise awareness of fair housing rights and combat discriminatory practices that disproportionately impact communities of color.

What Fair Housing Month Means to Us

Fair Housing Month isn’t just about honoring the legacy of the Fair Housing Act. It’s about carrying that legacy forward. It’s about acknowledging that while we’ve made progress, we still have work to do. And it’s about recommitting to the belief that everyone deserves a safe, decent, and affordable place to call home—regardless of race, income, or background.
